Unit 1:  Project (Pearson Set)

Learning aim(s)
LO1 Discuss the stages of a design process and the types of information required to communicate, share and manage the project process
LO2 Explain the different types of construction information developed through the course of a project
LO3 Produce design propositions that address project requirements defined through feasibility stages
LO4 Present a construction information package, highlighting the coordination of information between different project stakeholders to ensure accuracy.

Vocational Scenario or Context
Since January 2022, Welsh Government has required that all new school buildings have to achieve Net Zero status. This project scenario will guide you through all the required design considerations both for construction and services and will draw on your previous learning from the first year modules and also from the modules being covered this year.

TASK 1
Initially, you should establish the scope for the project. In this case, this will involve identifying U values, design temperatures and air change rates for the building. The occupancy of the building will also have to be established.

Criteria covered by this task:

Unit/Criteria reference

To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:

 P1

Describe the stages and activities of a construction design process.

 P2

Explain the types of information required throughout the different stages of a project process.

 M1

Assess the relationship between design and project stages and the information sharing requirements in each.

 D1

Critically evaluate the relationship between design and project stages, highlighting the processes and procedures to ensure information coordination throughout.

TASK 2
You will be designing the services required for the building, so it will be your responsibility to ensure that these are as efficient as possible and comply with the current Building Regulations and the requirements of Welsh Government, in that all buildings from January 2022 have to achieve Net Zero.

In order to establish the carbon emissions and energy usage for the building, an SBEM calculation will need to be carried out. This will indicate the amount, if any, of carbon that will need to be offset.

Criteria covered by this task:

Unit/Criteria reference

To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:

 P3

Examine a brief to ascertain the requirements of a building project

 P4

Outline the relationships between drawings, schedules and specifications.

 M2

Analyse the importance of clash detection and information coordination.

 D1

Critically evaluate the relationship between design and project stages, highlighting the processes and procedures to ensure information coordination throughout.

TASK 3
After completing your design of the building fabric and services, any carbon required to be offset will have to be identified and you will be required to show how this additional carbon can be offset.

Criteria covered by this task:

Unit/Criteria reference

To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:

 P5

Create construction drawings and details using industry-standard tools and techniques.

 P6

Produce specifications, schedules and an outline construction health and safety phase plan for a given project.

 M3

Prepare specification prelims and schedule of works, in coordination with construction drawings and details.

 D2

Evaluate a package of construction information, in relation to their coordination and accuracy.

TASK 4
Produce a report of all of your calculations, research and final results identifying the tasks carried out. This should be in the form of a technical report identifying your sources of information with suitable referencing.

You will be required to present your outcomes to an audience by means of a Powerpoint presentation.
You should also appraise your performance in developing the project and, if required, identify and comment on how it would be possible to improve your performance on future projects.

Criteria covered by this task:

Unit/Criteria reference

To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:

 P7

Present construction information to an audience of specialists and non-specialists.

 P8

Explain the coordination and information sharing between different roles and stakeholders in a construction project.

 M4

Analyse the ways in which different forms of contractual relationships between stakeholders influence flow of information in a construction project.

 D2

Evaluate a package of construction information, in relation to their coordination and accuracy.
