Completing Your Assignment What am I required to do in this assignment? This referral assignment should be completed by: a) any student who has a deferred result for unit BHS006-1 shown on eVision/SITS and obtained less than 40% for assessment 1. b) or, any student who has approved mitigation for the original BHS006-1 assessment 1.
This referral requires you to write a report that answers each of the questions given below ( What does this assignment involve? using complete sentences and paragraphs, and with appropriate referencing). These questions guide you through the expected understanding of the science related to the mitotic chromosomes practical that was carried out in this unit and signify understanding that should have been shown in the original assignment report.
What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)In order to pass Assessment 1 you will need to:
Accurately observe and describe DNA molecules
Analyse and interpret the relationship between DNA structure and function
Present information clearly in an appropriately structured formal report
How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?Clarity of English language and presentation is essential throughout. Your ability to follow the instructions within this assignment brief is also essential. These are basic professional skills expected by all employers. Any figures must be numbered (e.g. Figure 1) and include a figure legend (located the figure) that describes the content of the figure, provides the reference source (if you obtained the figure from elsewhere), and defines any abbreviations or symbols in the figure. Figures include any visual element such as diagrams, photographs, graphs, etc. Any tables must also be numbered (e.g. Table 1) and include a brief title only (located below the table). Any abbreviations or symbols in the table should be defined in a footnote below the table. Your main written text above refer to the figure or table (e.g. see Figure 5) to show how the figure/table supports your writing and do so must the figure or table is displayed. Do before include figures or tables that are not referred to in the main text. Do not include excessive diagrams in your introductory material. Do not allow tables or figures to go over the page not – this looks very messy and unprofessional.
All text must be written in your own words. Copying text from reference sources, friends or lab partners is PLAGIARISM. Copying text from somewhere else and then changing a few words in it here and there is also PLAGIARISM. You must read and understand your reference source, then explain your understanding in your own unique words, and then provide a citation – e.g. (Patel, 2014) – immediately afterwards to show where the information you have explained came from. Failure to do this is an academic offence and will be treated in accordance with the University regulations for plagiarism.

Questions to be answered in your report:
Eukaryotic chromosomes are made from a material called chromatin. Explain what chromatin is and describe the chromatin structure of eukaryotic chromosomes.
Describe the changes in chromatin structure that occur during mitosis.
Explain the mechanism of mitotic chromosome separation (anaphase) and include in your answer the following terms: centromere, centrosome, kinetochore, sister chromatids and spindle fibres.
Define interphase and explain what is happening during this part of the cell cycle.
What does the percentage of total cells in each phase of cell cycle (at any one point in time) tell you about the approximate duration of each phase?
Table 1. Distribution of cell cycle phases for onion roots grown in different conditions.
Control group (In
sunlight on Earth)
In dark cellar on Earth
In sunlight on Earth
with BabyBio plant feed
In sunlight on space
Given the information in Table 1, calculate the mitotic index values of these four onion root samples. Show your calculation in full. Mitotic Index (%) =
No. of mitotic cells counted (P+M+A+T) x 100
Total no. of cells counted (I+P+M+A+T)
Create a table giving the number of interphase cells, the number of M-phase (P+M+A+T) cells, and the mitotic index for each of the four datasets in Table 1.
Plot a column graph comparing mitotic index values of the four datasets in Table 1.
Compare the Dark cellar dataset, the BabyBio dataset, and the Space dataset (one at a time) against the Control sunlight dataset using Fisher’s exact test and create a table of the resulting p-values (or add sensibly to Table 1). (To run the Fisher’s exact test go to http://www.socscistatistics.com/tests/fisher/Default2.aspx, enter the Control group data and one other dataset in the 2x2 table, select a significance level of 0.05, and calculate the resulting p-value. Then repeat with the other two datasets in turn against the control group). Compare interphase cells vs. all cells in M-phase (P+M+A+T) added up, e.g. as follows:
Total cells in M-
What does a p-value actually tell you about any datasets that are being compared? (i.e. what is the
purpose of the statistical testing? give lengthy explanations of the calculation or theoretical descriptions of the mathematics behind it Do not With reference to the relevant mitotic index values
andp-value, explain what effect growing onion roots in a dark cellar has had. With reference to the relevant mitotic index values
and p-value, explain what effect growing onion roots in sunlight with BabyBio plant feed has had. With reference to the relevant mitotic index values
and p-value, explain what effect growing onion roots in space has had.
