Aim: To consider how the competing values approach can be applied effectively in change situations

Duration: 3 hours

Your tutor will now assign you to a group consisting of four students. In your groups, you are to review the following scenario using the competing values approach

Scenario

On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld convention, receiving substantial media attention. Jobs announced that the first iPhone would be released later that year. Since then, the iPhone has gone on to be a phenomenal success. It can be argued that bringing the iPhone to the market required the company to be successful across a number of aspects of change.

We would like you to research the development, production and sale of the iPhone and relate your findings to the four models of management suggested in Quinn et al. (2015) Competing Values Approach.

Each member of the group is to explore the changes from the perspective of their assigned model. You are required to identify the changes needed to contribute to the overall success of the iPhone, assessing the strengths and limitations of applying your particular model to the iPhone scenario. We would then like you to share your ideas with your group and explore how the separate approaches might have competing priorities. Discuss these conflicts and explore how the changes in one quadrant affected other areas.

In your group, create a short summary of approximately 300 words in length which details the required changes and outlines how the competing value approach was utilised in your approach.

Upload your group summary to the Studio for review and discussion with the other groups.

We would also like you to write a short piece of a maximum of 150 words in length, reflecting on your experience of the collaborative activity. You should aim to identify how this specific experience might influence future collaborative endeavours. You might like to explore the value of the experience or perhaps you simply found it challenging. Try to comment on the difficulties you faced and how you overcame them.

Upload your reflective piece to your tutor for feedback.
