Assignment Task:
Details of the Task. Consultancy Report (8,000 words).

Assignment Instructions:
This module aims to provide you with knowledge of advanced research methods as applied to sport management, and then to support students as they carry through a consultancy project to respond to a ‘real world’ problem or issue in sports (business and management). You will gain the capacity to collect, analyse and assess empirical data, which can be used to inform effective management decisions and strategies in the sports industry. It gives you the opportunity to reflect on your own development through the process of a ‘real-world’ problem identification, problem solving and working as a sport business consultant.

The Assessment 2 task builds on Assessment 1 (Consultancy Proposal) therefore the topic remains the same. Assessment 2 is the Consultancy Report.

Consultancy work for a client. The client for the sport management consultancy project may be an external source generated by you, an external client who has approached the university for assistance, or you may undertake a project for your own organisation. The consultancy work will be sourced from a local, regional, national or international sport business client (e.g. public, commercial or charitable organisation). You will be required to engage with the client, in-person or virtually / online, on a regular basis throughout the duration of the consultancy work.

You are required to complete a written consultancy report. This report must provide detail of the solution to, or outcome of, your consultancy assignment. Your report should include:

  • Title: A short title for the project, the client company’s name and brief descriptive phases.
  • Executive Summary: Represents the highlights from the report setting out aim of the work, methodology, findings, consultancy value to the client, and conclusion.
  • Introduction: Background to the client (includes client requirements and consultant’s task) and consultancy research (includes overall purpose of work, main research question and sub-research questions), review of literature, research methodology, contribution to knowledge and practice, value of consultancy to the client (consider success measures and outcomes), and structure of report.
  • Consultancy Document: The full consultancy document, in the required format, for the client. This should include presentation, analysis and discussion of your research findings from the conduct of study, and actions for the client that come out of the consultancy work.
  • Conclusion: At the end of the consultancy report summarise the key research findings, explain whether the aim, main research question and related sub-research questions have been met, propose directions for future consultancy research for the client.
  • Appendix: Appendices can show data supporting the main report or provide further information to interested parties that do not necessarily form part of the report.
  • Reference List: All citations using Cite Them Right conventions.
