21st Century Challenges in Operations Strategy

This assignment will enable you to explore the challenges and opportunities facing managers responsible for operations in medium to large scale companies. These managers will work for companies for whom ways of producing goods and providing services is currently changing fundamentally as they respond to the following four great challenges:

• The digital revolution
• The changing physical climate
• The global shifts in economic power
• The fallout from the global pandemic

Each of these will have an impact on these companies to some degree, from machine learning to the search for vaccines, and many more.

You are required to complete the following tasks: 

1. Identify a major company on which your assignment will be based, subject to your tutor’s approval.  This may be a manufacturer and / or service provider but it must operate on at least a national scale. Assess the overall impact of the four great challenges on their current operations and identify specific aspects of their current operations that are likely to change or are already changing. (600 words)

1. Select one of the changes identified and explore the process of product and service innovation that could be used to guide the company through this process of adapting to change. (600 words)

1. Identify, describe and evaluate the impact of the challenges on the firm’s requirements for human resources and for physical locations.      (800 words)

1. Assuming that fundamental change will always carry the risk of impacts on quality, set out, describe and explain what methods the firm may employ to ensure that any negative impact on quality is minimised, and consistently high quality can be assured.  (1,000 words)

Write, concisely, a report of three thousand words and four sections guided by the word lengths indicated above – use subheadings to clearly signpost content of your report.

Use appendices for data about the company, and the main body of your report for analysing, interpreting, evaluating that data. Appendices are NOT included in the word count. 

Acknowledge all sources in a Reference List, using the Harvard Referencing System (combining industry and academic sources).
