This module will take as a starting point the recognition that human rights are the entitlement of all people, acknowledging that children are individual rights holders. It will also recognise that children have specific rights through the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child under which they have a right to achieve their full potential and participate in decisions that affect their lives.
Finally, the module is guided by the Council of Europe vision ‘Well-being for All’ which encompasses individual wellbeing as well as societal and global well-being, extending to future generations.
Students who successfully complete this module should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of children’s rights and apply this perspective to a range of policy and practice issues;
Critically analyse the concept of rights-based early years practice;
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the concept of well-being and its meaning within early childhood;
Critically analyse the relationship between children’s rights, early years practice and well-being;
Demonstrate understandings of the complex issue of power dynamics within early childhood education
Identify methods of promoting and protecting children’s rights in early years practice, including the right to be heard, to participate, to inclusion, amongst others;
Articulate an informed position on theories of childhood and children’s rights as they apply to the practice of inclusion, addressing diversity and equality issues in the early years;
Implement and support a rights-based approach to practice and policy in relation to early childhood education and well-being;
Locate early years practice and research within the global conversations on children’s rights and well-being.
