Subject description
This subject will familiarise students with the important rules and concepts of public international law that underpin the Law of the Sea. It will cover the international legal system, sovereignty and jurisdiction, sources of international law, treaty making and the settlement of international disputes. It will then move on to consider the historical development of the Law of the Sea, up to and including the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention. The subject will also provide an opportunity for students to refresh key academic skills in preparation for their postgraduate studies.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
Investigate key concepts in public international law that underpin the international legal system and the law of the sea, including sovereignty, territory, jurisdiction and international dispute resolution
Understand the development of the modern law of the sea through an examination of its history
Develop information literacy and academic research skills to support the maritime/fisheries law and policy
Develop skills in communicating information and ideas about maritime/fisheries law and policy to different audiences
