NU606 Principles and Practice of Acute Medical Nursing

This post graduate module is intended for those who work in an acute medical setting and builds on the core clinical skills and theories covered in the module “Recognising and Responding to Client Deterioration”.

Applicants should have already completed “Recognising and Responding to Client Deterioration” as the focus within this module "Principles and Practice of Acute Medical Nursing" is critical thinking and exploration of the national issues related to acute medicine.  The use of algorithms, care pathways and patient information material aimed at the most common acute medical presentations are examined with respect to best practice.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Knowledge of the history and genesis of acute medicine as a specialty nationally and internationally.
  • Understand the best delivery of acute medical services in the context of an integrated service area (ISA), case management, and appropriate pathways of care and transfer protocols
  • Awareness of the role of the nurse in acting proactively in prompting investigations and timely initiation of treatment for patients
  • Understanding the importance of recording and interpreting physiological parameters and other abnormal observations
  • Engage in and understand the concept of nurse led discharge planning using integrated discharge planning policies as appropriate
  • Competent in the recognition and management of common medical emergencies including shock, respiratory failure and cardiac failure
  • Recognition and management of patients who present with acute exacerbations of chronic disease.
  • Knowledge of patient education approaches and principles for those with chronic disease i.e. emphasis on enhancing the patients quality of life and on prevention of  exacerbations and repeat hospital admissions
  • Examination of evidence based guidelines and care pathways for those presenting with respiratory and cardiac conditions
