Notes on writing a Research Paper - Outline The following outline shows a basic format for most academic papers. No matter what length the paper needs to be, it should still follow the format of having an introduction, body and conclusion. Read over what typically goes in each section of the paper.
A. Introduction The introduction should have some of the following elements, depending on the type of paper:
Start with an attention grabber: a short story, example, statistic, quote from famous person, or historical context that introduces the paper topic.
Give an overview of any issues involved with the subject.
Define any key terminology needed to understand the topic.
Quote or paraphrase sources revealing the controversial nature of the subject (argumentative papers only).
Highlight background information on the topic needed to understand the direction of the paper.
Say something about person, event, etc. that can easily lead to the thesis statement.
Thesis statement - A thesis statement usually appears at the conclusion of the introductory paragraph of a paper. It offers a concise summary of the main point or claim of the essay, research paper, etc. It is usually expressed in one sentence, and the statement may be reiterated elsewhere.
B. Body Paragraph #1
Topic Sentence – First information you found from researching your focus question.
Facts, statistics, direct quotations.
Analogies, comparisons, expert opinions.
Own ideas, opinions, comments about what you found (without saying “I”).
Concluding sentence.
C. Body Paragraph #2
Topic Sentence – Next idea you found out from researching your focus question.
Facts, statistics, direct quotations.
Analogies, comparisons, expert opinions.
Own ideas, opinions, comments about what you found (without saying “I”).
Concluding sentence.
D. Body Paragraph #3
Topic Sentence – Third piece of information you found from researching your focus question.
Facts, statistics, direct quotations.
Analogies, comparisons, expert opinions.
Own ideas, opinions, comments about what you found (without saying “I”).
Concluding sentence.
E. Conclusion
Restate your thesis from the introduction in different words.
Briefly summarise each main point found in the body paragraphs (avoid going over 2 sentences for each point).
Include what else might one like to know about this topic.
Explain why this topic is important.
End with a strong clincher statement: n appropriate, meaningful final sentence that ties the whole point of the paper together (may refer back to the attention grabber at the start).
