Description
The Government is releasing public data to become more transparent and foster innovation via https://data.gov.uk/. Some of this data was available before, but data.gov.uk brings it together in one searchable website. Making this data easily available. On this website you can find data published by government departments and agencies, public bodies and local authorities.
OR - Find and use data about Bristol via https://opendata.bristol.gov.uk/. The data can be viewed and reused by anyone, subject to its license. Most data sets are collected by Bristol City Council, but you could also share your data.
OR - You can use dataset provided in the lab sessions.
OR - download data from any other (reliable) source.
OR - use your own dataset(s).
OR you may use Google Data Search via https://toolbox.google.com/datasetsearch to locate interesting dataset(s).
Your tasks are as follows:
Find a dataset that is interesting to you and describe it
Process and Query Data using Apache Hadoop (HDFS) and Hive (Note: - If you are unable to use Hortonworks due to Covid-19 locked down and restricted access to UWE computing facilities then you are allowed to use any software/tool to process data & retrieve information/knowledge. However, you must declare this in your power point presentation).
Find “interesting stuff” (results, patterns, findings, etc.) and demonstrate the relationship between data, information and knowledge with examples and conclude your finding(s)
Students’ ability to perform the above tasks and convey the outcomes of their work via a group presentation will form part of the assessment. In particular students should be able to present relationship between “data, information and knowledge” and explain their findings (results) clearly and succinctly.
Format
Students are free to select the most appropriate presentation format as agreed within the group; this could be PowerPoint, Prezi or any other form of presentation software (supported within UWE) and can include audio and video submissions. The team presentation should last no longer than 15-20 minutes.
Students are also required to provide an individual reflective log associated with the process of the group work. This should be presented using the reflective log template available on Blackboard (see Assignments section of the module page). This should be a summary of reflective practice in relation to the group work process and your individual role in it - should not exceed 1,000 words in total.
Assessment Criteria
Group Presentation:
Marks will be awarded according to the extent to which the above tasks are performed demonstrating the following (corresponding weightings are shown in brackets):
Dataset selection and appropriate description / reasons of selection (10%)
Process and Query Data (20%)
Find ‘something’ (results, patterns, findings, etc.) interesting and demonstrate the relationship between data, information and knowledge with examples and conclude your finding(s) (30%)
Individual Reflective Log:
